THE SPEAKER

Dr. Barbara Onnis is Associate Professor in History and Institution of Asia at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Cagliari. She is the coordinator of the Master Course in International Relations and responsible for the Confucius Classroom of the University of Cagliari. Her research interests are mainly focused on the international relations of PRC. Her current research investigates the relationship between PRC and the EU, with special reference to both its economic and geopolitical/strategic value, and a focus on the future perspectives, in consideration of the challenges posed by both the BRI and the US administration’s anti-globalization and pro-nationalist agenda.

ABSTRACT

The lecture will focus on the relationship between PRC and the European Union, with a special reference to both its economic and geopolitical dimension. Despite the difficulties in conceiving their strategic partnership as a real one (due to their clashing values and different geopolitical interests and priorities), and the contrasts on specific issues (arms’ embargo, MES, Beijing’s growing involvement with sub-regional formats, growing criticism of China’s Belt and Road Initiative), the relationship seems to retain a high value for both parties, especially in front of Donald Trump administration's anti-globalization and pro-nationalist agenda.
