THE SPEAKER
Cassidy R. Sugimoto is an Associate Professor in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington. She is currently on rotation at the National Science Foundation as Program Director for the Science of Science and Innovation Policy program. She also currently serves as President of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics. Her research examines the ways in which knowledge is produced, disseminated, and rewarded. Her research has been published in Nature, Lancet, and other high profile disciplinary and generalist publications. She has an undergraduate degree in music performance and Ph.D. in information and library science all from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
ABSTRACT
Science is a global, dynamic, and collaborative activity. However, our measurements of science are largely static and do not account for the growing complexity involved in the making of science. In this talk, we discuss the development of new indicators for science that take into account scientific mobility, collaboration, specialization, and scientific leadership. We will discuss the construction of these indicators and their implications for measuring the growth of national production in science. Our talk emphasizes the anachronistic lens of “brain drain” and seeks to provide a more accurate lens through notions of “circulation.” We discuss implications at the national, global, and disciplinary levels.
