2023 "Fudan-LSE Academic Annual Conference" Was Held in London

On November 21-22, 2023, the 2nd Fudan-LSE Annual Academic Conference was held at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The theme of this year's conference was China and the World: Priorities and Challenges in Public Policy. The conference was organized by the LSE-Fudan Global Public Policy Hub affiliated to the School of Public Policy of LSE.

At the opening ceremony, Vice President Susana Mourato of LSE and President Li Jin of Fudan University delivered opening speeches. Vice President Mourato pointed out that since establishing a strategic partnership, LSE and Fudan had continuously expanded cooperation in global public policy research and education. Fudan became LSE's most important paper co-publishing partner in China. President Li Jin stated that the collaboration between Fudan and LSE was a model of academic partnership, reflecting both universities’ pursuit of knowledge, creativity, and collaboration. Professor Bingchun Meng, Co-Director of the LSE-Fudan Global Public Policy Hub, presided over the opening ceremony and the keynote speeches.

Afterwards, Professor Keyu Jin from the LSE Department of Economics, Professor Shiping Tang from the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University, and Professor Xiaojun Yan from the School of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong delivered keynote speeches. Professor Keyu Jin analyzed the current trends of the Chinese economy, its resilience, and the key variables that would influence the sustainability of China's economic development in the future. Professor Shiping Tang's speech revolved around his proposed New Development Triangle theory, discussing the sustainability of national economic development from the perspectives of national capabilities, institutional foundations, and socio-economic policies. Professor Xiaojun Yan argued for understanding China amidst its changes and grasping the Chinese system from a global perspective.

Following the opening ceremony, the conference hosted four panels. The first panel focused on Economic Policy and Technological Governance. Speakers included Jonathan Liebenau from LSE, Cheng Lu from the University of Oxford Business School, Jiang Yu and Beibei Zhang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Li Tang from the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University. Professor Bingchun Meng moderated the panel.

The second panel revolved around Climate Change Governance. Speakers included Yixian Sun from the University of Bath, Haoqi Qian from the Institute for Global Public Policy of Fudan University, Yutao Wang's team from the School of Environment of Fudan University, Tanvi Deshpande from the LSE-Fudan Centre, and Marie Harder from the School of Environment of Fudan University. Professor Timothy Hildebrandt from the LSE Department of Social Policy moderated the panel.

The third panel focused on Healthcare and Health Policy. Speakers included Yuxi Zhang from UCL and Yan Wang from Lancaster University, Ke Shen from the School of Sociology at Fudan University, and Yingyao Chen from the School of Public Health at Fudan University. Hu Bo from the LSE Care Policy and Evaluation Centre moderated the panel.

The fourth panel revolved around Demography and Social Policy. Speakers included Jianzi He from the Fudan Institute for Global Public Policy, Binbin Chen from the School of Sociology at Fudan University, and Chunrong Liu, Executive Deputy Director of the Fudan-European China Centre. Shuang Chen from the LSE Department of Social Policy moderated the panel.

In the closing ceremony, Professor Yijia Jing, Co-Director of the LSE-Fudan Global Public Policy Hub and Dean of the Institute for Global Public Policy of Fudan University, delivered a brief speech. He believed that the LSE-Fudan Global Public Policy Hub is increasingly playing an active role as a platform of academic communication and innovation through the joint efforts of both parties. He invited scholars from around the world to attend the 3rd Fudan-LSE Academic Annual Conference to be hosted by Fudan in 2024.
