On April 16, 2024, the Fudan Institute for Global Public Policy (IGPP) organized the 10th lecture of the Fudan-Arab Lecture Series. Professor Jose A. Puppim de Oliveira, a Fudan Chair Professor and a professor of the Getulio Vargas Foundation University in Brazil, delivered a lecture on the topic of “Cities and Global Governance of Climate Change: Towards the World Urban Forum in Egypt.” The lecture was hosted by Professor Yijia Jing, the Dean of the IGPP. Professor Oliveira is one of the most influential researchers globally, focusing on sustainable development-related topics and studying how global and national institutions are interconnected in governance and action.
Professor Oliveira highlighted the crucial role of innovation in the global and local responses to climate change. This innovation encompasses various dimensions, including technology, society, and both bottom-up and top-down approaches. Subsequently, he discussed how innovation occurs within cities, the relevant learning mechanisms, the dynamic changes in the sources of innovative knowledge for urban governments, as well as innovation and strategic leadership within the public sector.
During the commentary and Q&A session, Haoqi Qian, Assistant Professor of the IGPP made a few comments. The audience also exchanged views on topics such as social sustainability in the process of transitioning to eco-friendly cities and the sharing of climate change responsibilities among different countries.
