IGPP Welcomes Its First Global Leader Alumnus

On the morning of November 20, 2025, Fudan University conferred an Honorary Doctorate on Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS). President Li Jin, Chair of Fudan University’s Academic Degree Evaluation Committee, read the official approval from the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and presented the honorary doctoral certificate to Secretary-General Gheit. Dr. Gheit then delivered the keynote address at the 3rd China–Arab Forum on Global Development and Governance and witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Fudan University and the LAS Secretariat to jointly establish the General Secretariat of the LAS–Fudan Centre for Global Leadership Development.

The honorary degree nomination was initiated by the Institute for Global Public Policy (IGPP), and the ceremony was hosted by Dean Yijia Jing of IGPP. The event was attended by more than 200 students and faculty members from across the university.

Before the ceremony, Secretary-General Gheit led a delegation from the LAS Secretariat to visit IGPP. Dean Jing, along with IGPP faculty and students, warmly welcomed the delegation, and student representatives presented flowers to the Secretary-General and his wife.

Dean Jing congratulated Secretary-General Gheit on receiving the honorary doctorate and expressed the hope that IGPP students would view him as a role model, aspiring to become global scholars, global citizens, and global leaders. He also shared the major developments IGPP has achieved in recent years. Secretary-General Gheit received a brief overview of IGPP’s programs, curriculum design, faculty development, and international cooperation, and he encouraged students and faculty to aim high and pursue even greater accomplishments.

Professor Amr Salama, Fudan University Honorary Professor and Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities (AARU), welcomed Secretary-General Gheit on behalf of IGPP’s faculty, congratulated him on becoming IGPP’s first honorary doctor, and extended congratulations to Mrs. Laila Salah.

During the exchange of gifts, Dean Jing presented Secretary-General Gheit with a carefully curated photo album documenting the progress of cooperation between Fudan University, the LAS Secretariat, the AARU, and other Arab academic and public institutions. Secretary-General Gheit remarked that these recorded achievements signify the beginning of a new chapter. In return, he presented his signed works Witness to War and Peace and My Testimony: Egypt’s Foreign Policy (2004–2011) (Chinese edition), along with a Rosetta Stone reproduction engraved with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Distinguished guests included Ambassador Hossam Zaki, LAS Assistant Secretary-General; Ambassador Ahmed Mostafa, Head of the LAS Mission to China, and his wife; Minister Plenipotentiary Mohamed Sadiq, Director of the LAS Asia and Oceania Department; Minister Plenipotentiary Faraj Al-Ajmi, Director of the LAS Education and Scientific Research Department; Professor Ismail Farag, President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport; Professor Walid Salama, Senior Adviser to the AARU; and Mr. Zhixin Jiao, Director of the 3rd Bureau of the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee. Also present were Fudan University Vice President Zhimin Chen, Director Li’an Lu of the Fudan Office of Global Partnerships, IGPP faculty and student representatives, and young LAS officials participating in IGPP’s 2nd LAS Secretariat Young Officials Training Program.
