On 17th April, 2019, Fudan-LSE lecture series was jointly held by the Institute for Global Public Policy (IGPP) and School of International Relations & Public Affairs of Fudan University.Vincent Larivière, Associate Professor at Universitè de Montrèal, delivered a lecture entitled Measuring Research: From the Impact Factor to Open Access. This lecture was moderated by Professor Li Tang of School of International Relations & Public Affairs of Fudan University.

In the beginning of this lecture, Professor Tang Li introduced the research background of Vincent. Vincent Larivière holds the Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication at Université de Montréal, where he is an associate professor of information science. In the lecture, he provided a historical review of the generation and development of research measurements from the perspective of the dynamics of quantitative evaluation of science and technology. Vincent pointed out that as a traditional method of research assessment, peer review entails high costs and is subjective. Therefore, the quantitative research assessment based on research outputs that are publicly published is an essential and efficient complement to peer review. Subsequently, Vincent discussed the state of art in research on transformations of scholarly communication, and elaborated on the mechanisms of open access in the digital ecosystem. He concluded by discussing the challenges and opportunities for research assessment in the new era.

Researchers and students from School of International Relations & Public Affairs of Fudan University, Tongji University, East China Normal University and other universities attended this lecture.
