Time:2019-01-08

On January 8, 2019, Prof. Alvaro Mendez, Co-Director of the Global South Unit at the London School of Economics and also a Senior Fudan Fellow, talked on " The Political Economy of China–Latin America Relations: The AIIB Membership " during the No.3 Fudan-LSE Lecture Series. At the very beginning, Mendez introduced China-Latin America relations. The two sides had very strong economic ties in terms of trade volume and free trade agreements and had worked together to dealing with infrastructure challenges facing the Latin American countries. Take the China-LAC Cooperation Plan 2015-2019 as an example, trade, investment and financial cooperation was chosen as three engines to drive Latin American regional development, with key cooperative areas like manufacturing, agricultural and technology innovation to promote all-round industrial connections. Lastly, Mendez talked the current situation of AIIB, the newly-born multilateral development bank. He believed that AIIB would exert significant policy influence in Asia, Europe and Africa. Seven Latin American countries was ratified as member state. But several influencing factors, i.e. America’s role, perceptions and policies of Latin American political leaders, AIIB’s sound investigation and knowledge about Latin America should be taken into considerations if smooth operation in promoting economic development in Latin America was expected.
