The Speaker:

Emma McCoy is LSE’s Vice President and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education, and Professor in the Department of Statistics. She has a broad interest in education, particularly in Mathematics and Data Science. She has wide interests in mathematical education, is a past member of the Royal Society’s Advisory Committee for Mathematics Education (ACME), and is a governor of the Imperial College London Mathematics School. Her current research interests are in developing and applying causal inference methodology for robust estimation of treatment effects, particularly in a transport setting.

Abstract:

Daily travel is a potential major source of stress, and active travel has been associated with lower levels of stress compared to other travel modes. This talk will provide evidence in support of active travel policies using data collected as part of the Physical Activity through Sustainable Transport Approaches (PASTA) study, which collected data from 122 participants across 3 European cities. I will discuss some of the challenges of analysing observational data from the study, highlighting key results on the impacts of travel mode choices on objectively-measured stress using propensity score matching.
