No. 59 Professor Larry Kramer Lectured on “The Role of the Social Sciences”

On September 6, 2024, the LSE-Fudan Research Centre and the Fudan Institute for Global Public Policy (IGPP) co-hosted the 59th lecture in the Fudan-LSE Lecture Series. Professor Larry Kramer, President of the London School of Economics and Political Science, delivered a lecture on the theme of The Role of the Social Sciences. Professor Yijia Jing, Dean of IGPP, chaired the lecture.

Professor Kramer explored the unique value of social sciences in addressing complex global challenges in the context of globalization and digital transformation. He argued that pressing issues cannot be resolved solely through technological advancements or economic growth but require profound reflection and adjustments at the social and policy levels. Highlighting issues such as political polarization, economic inequality, and technological transformation, Professor Kramer emphasized the critical role of social sciences in rebuilding consensus, repairing social cohesion, and finding pathways for harmonious coexistence between humans and technology. He also stressed the pivotal role of universities in translating academic findings into actionable solutions, thereby contributing to social equity and sustainable development. 

During the Q&A session, students and faculty engaged in lively discussions with Professor Kramer on the future directions of social sciences, talent cultivation, and pressing societal issues. Professor Kramer emphasized the importance of universities in equipping students with critical thinking and rational dialogue skills, empowering them to effectively communicate and understand diverse perspectives. Addressing the competitiveness of social science students in the job market, he highlighted that the essence of social sciences lies in understanding and addressing complex societal issues, ultimately contributing to a better future for humanity. Professor Kramer also encouraged the audience to actively engage in social science research, utilizing their insights and expertise to tackle global challenges and drive meaningful change.

On behalf of the IGPP, Professor Jing presented a gift to Professor Kramer, and the lecture concluded with warm applause.
