On October 18, 2024, the Fudan Institute for Global Public Policy (IGPP) organized the 15th lecture of the Fudan-Arab Lecture Series. Associate Professor Danuvas Sagarik from the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), Thailand, delivered a lecture on the theme of Public Employee Use of Social Media at Work: Competency, Collaboration, and Communication of Workplace Policy, which was chaired by Yijia Jing, Dean of IGPP.
Associate Professor Sagarik serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Graduate School of Public Administration (GSPA). He is also a member of the Education Commission at the Thai Ministry of Education. His research spans digital economy, digital transformation, and economic policy.
Associate Professor Sagarik introduced the heavy reliance on social media in Thailand as a starting point. He noted that social media has facilitated collaboration and communication among civil servants during the digital transformation, but its misuse has also led to challenges such as reduced efficiency .
Based on two empirical studies, Associate Professor Sagarik concluded that moderate use of social media can effectively enhance collaboration and communication. However, excessive or inappropriate use may undermine efficiency and negatively affect the professional image and public trust in the public sector. He recommended that public agencies establish clear policy frameworks, regularly assess and refine these policies, and strengthen employee training to better address potential risks.
During the Q&A session, Associate Professor Sagarik engaged in in-depth discussions with attendees, addressing topics such as variations in social media adaptability and usage habits across different age groups.
On behalf of the IGPP, Professor Jing then presented a gift to Associate Professor Sagarik, and the lecture concluded successfully with a group photo.
