On December 17, 2024, the Fudan Institute for Global Public Policy (IGPP) organized the 66st lecture of the Fudan-LSE Lecture Series. Associate Professor Samuele Bibi from Aalborg University delivered a lecture on the theme of Patterns of Subordination in the Global South: Natural Resources, Foreign Ownership, and Financial Inflows, which was chaired by Yijia Jing, Dean of IGPP. Commentators included Program Manager Veli-Matti Palomäki from Fudan Nordic Centre and Associate Professor Haoqi Qian from IGPP.

Associate Professor Bibi is a Macro-Development Economist specializing in financial, monetary, and structural dynamics with a focus on developing and emerging economies. His research examines cross-border capital flows, trade dynamics, and the hierarchical structure of international monetary, financial, and trade systems.

Associate Professor Bibi began by outlining the rationale for examining the economic structures of Peru and Kazakhstan, emphasizing the similarities between the two economies, including the value and volatility of foreign direct investment (FDI). Drawing on research on unsustainable financial fragility, he conducted a comprehensive analysis of the macroeconomic conditions of both countries, focusing on current account deficits and trade balances. His analysis highlighted potential economic risks facing Peru and Kazakhstan.

During the Q&A session, Veli-Matti Palomäki asked about the relevance of Mexico’s economy to those of Peru and Kazakhstan. In response, Associate Professor Bibi explained that the three countries are comparable due to the study’s focus on economic ownership models. Associate Professor Qian highlighted the influence of geopolitical factors on FDI in Peru and Kazakhstan and inquired about potential improvements to their economic structures. In addressing this, Associate Professor Bibi illustrated the possibilities for economic transformation by referencing China’s import-export evolution over the past few decades. Following this, the speaker and students engaged in discussions.

On behalf of the IGPP, Professor Jing presented a gift to Associate Professor Bibi, and the lecture concluded successfully with a group photo.
